Orginally a track to the mining town of Adamsfield. Located in Adams Valley west of the Florentine Valley. The track is 13km long and beings in the east at the intersection of No. 5 Forestry Rd and Cooks Track ((AGD 66 - 454850E, 5271700N); and ends in the west at Clear Hill Road (AGD66 - 442700E, 5269700N). It passes Timbs Track, Rasselas Track, the Bomardier Track, the old township of Adamsfield (AGD66 - 445500E, 5269500N), and Morleys Mansion west of the Adams River. The eastern end of the Adamsfield track starts 1.5 km along “No 5 Road”, one of the forestry roads in the Florentine Valley. The track is clearly marked with tapes, though care should be taken in the centre section where the track wanders because of many tree falls. Churchills Hut is 20 minutes from the start. After a bit more than an hour you reach the junction with Timbs track. A handwritten sign gives directions: to the left is the Gordon River Rd (1 hr), to the right is Florentine Creek (20 minutes). The Rasselas Track heads north just west of the Florentine Creek crossing. After approximately another 1.5 hours you meet the juntion with the Bombardier Track, then after another 1.5hours you reach the remains of Adamsfield, then Morleys Mansion west of the Adams River (another 30mins). The track is passable in a vehicle in dry conditions from here to Clear Hill Rd (another 15mins) where there is a locked gate.
There are two ways to get to the eastern end of the track by vehicle, from Maydena or from Wayatinah. Coming from the North West of the state, the Wayatinah route is ~50 km less, following the main forestry thoroughfare between Wayatinah and Maydena. The gravel road is kept in good condition.
From Maydena to start of track (~17 km)
Head west on Gordon River Road for 3 kilometres, cross an overpass (which allows the Styx road to go underneath), and turn north onto the Styx road just beyond the overpass. Take the left fork after 200 metres. This is Florentine Road. It is not signposted. The right fork is the Styx road which loops under the highway.
Turn west (left) onto “No 5 Road” after 14 kms (42S 42.214, 146E 28.167, 496m). No 5 Road is near the bottom of a winding descent, a few hundred metres after the Tim Shea turnoff.
Drive 1.5 km along No 5 Road and park near a gate. The start of the track is 250 m further along the road, on the north side opposite a disused vehicle track (42S 42.268, 146E 26.995, 458m).
From Wayatinah to start of track (~50 km)
On the return journey north it is easy to go the wrong way when 20.6 km from Tiger Road (S42 28.424, E146 30.394 (WGS84)). There is a fork in the road and a road sign at this point: “Florentine Forest Drive” at the top, and “Wayatinah and Lyell Hwy” underneath. The sign is angled at 45º to the left and the Wayatinah part is easy to miss if you are not concentrating. The right fork (which goes straight ahead and appears to be the main road) takes you into a maze of forestry roads. If you mistakenly take the right fork you will come to a sign on the left after 1.5 km (S42 28.365, E146 31.091 (WGS84)) which says “Through to Wayatinah Road” – a minor logging road that will eventually get you to Wayatinah but in a roundabout way. Backtrack to the fork if you see this sign.
Obviously, many people have taken the wrong fork, so Forest Tasmania decided to put up a sign to stop motorists becoming lost. In summary, the simplest way to stay on the main road after the Tiger Road junction when heading north, is to keep to the left fork if there is a choice.

This is the original access track from the Gordon River Road into Gordonvale and Vale of Rasselas. Located in the Florentine valley, grid reference (AGD 66) - Gordon River Road 452500E, 5267800N; Adamsfield Track 452000E, 5270600N. Well maintained and marked track, starting on the Gordon River Road. Currently there is a long-term forest protest here. Track is 3.5 km long with a 20m-height difference. Expect to take 1.5 hours. Track starts in tall old growth forest. After a short while exits forest onto an open scrubby plain with nice views of the Saw Back and Tiger Range and forests of the Upper Florentine. The start of the track is approximately 20 km from Maydena, and 4.3 km from a “Welcome to the South West – Heart of Wilderness” sign near the highest point of the road. The actual start is marked by a small brown sign on the north side. On the opposite side is a sign for Mt Mueller. A carpark is 50 metres further west. This is the original access track into Gordonvale (Ernie Bond's residence 1934-1952), the Vale of Rasselas and the Denison Range, starting from the Adamsfield Track.
Track is disused south of where Richea Creek meets the Gordon River. North of here the track is easily followed across the buttongrass plain until the turnoff to Lake Rhona. Further north the original track is overgrown. Track is 26km long with a 470m-height difference. From Terry Walsh Road expect to take 7 hours to Lake Rhona.
From the Adamsfield Track, the Rasselas Track starts at Florentine Creek in rainforest, but soon enters an open button grass plain. The bridge that once crossed the Gordon River (42S 38.797, 146E 22.805 (WGS84)) burnt down in 1950. The river can be forded here at low water across shingle banks and one narrow, deeper section on the southern side. A flying fox (42S 38.814, 146E 22.729 (WGS84)) replaced the bridge but is now abandoned and surrounded by scrub. The wire ropes are still tethered to foundation stumps, and attached to the stumps are a few warning signs from National Parks. Upstream 250 m (42S 38.823, 146E 22.559 (WGS84)) is another crossing suggested by the National Park signs. This is an easy low-water crossing on a weir-type rock formation that extends almost the width of the river. Only a few metres on the south side would have to be waded.
The Richea Creek Track begins on the Gordon Range at the end of Terry Walsh Road. To get to this forestry road from Maydena:
Head west on Gordon River Road for 3 kilometres, cross an overpass (which allows the Styx road to go underneath), and turn north onto the Styx road just beyond the overpass. Take the left fork after 200 metres. This is Florentine Road. It is not signposted. The right fork is the Styx road which loops under the highway.Travel north for 26km to Tiger Road (42S 35.864, 146E 27.536 (WGS84)). Florentine Road veers east here, Tiger road continues straight on (north).
Follow Tiger Road for 3.7 km to Range Road (42S 34.527, 146E 26.009 (WGS84)).
Turn west onto Range Road and follow for 3.5 km to Terry Walsh Road (42S 35.346, 146E 24.380 (WGS84))
Turn west and around a hair-pin bend and follow Terry Walsh Road south for 3.3 km through encroaching forest. Continue to a car park at the end of the road (42S 36.446, 146E 23.823 (WGS84)). Ignore minor logging tracks along the way.
National Parks have a walker log book at the start of the track, and a boot cleaning station five minutes in. The track follows Richea Creek, unseen in a deep valley to the north. The Gordon River is reached in less than an hour. As at Nov 2013, the crossing is via a huge fallen tree. In the event it is swept away, only attempt a crossing if water is less than thigh deep. The river can be high due to rain upstream. West of the Gordon River the marked track continues for another 600m through swampy forest to meet the original Rasselas track (42S 37.058, 146E 22.107 (WGS84)).

Located south of the Strathgordon Rd (B61) between Lake Gordon and Lake Pedder, grid references (GDA94) Trackhead Carpark 440500E, 5258100N; Summit Trig 442500E, 5256120N. This well used track that is tagged with ribbon and climbs 700m over 7km to the summit of Mt Wedge. Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to summit. There is a sign at track head car park and a weathered sign about 10 minutes along the track. The entrance to the large car park is well marked with a roadside sign. The initial stage of the track is part of the Wedge Nature Walk, a circuit walk of about 10 minutes duration. At the far side of the circuit walk is a sign indicating the Mt Wedge track. Follow this track for about 200-300m (the track now goes under the power lines) to the 4wd track. (note this track joins the B61 about half a km west of the car park.). Turn left onto the 4wd track and follow this track for about 5 minutes. Note the signpost at the junction for the Mt Wedge track heading off the 4wd track to the right. Initially the track is flat and crosses a small log bridge. Then the track rises sharply and the walk climbs upwards. The well padded track is well maintained and is well marked with markers and marking tape by Forestry Tasmania. (Update 2010; the signs are degrading and rotting.) After about 1 hour the gradient lessens. However the track is still heading uphill. Another 10 minutes and the forest ends and the brush commences. Shortly the first of the rock faces begins. The first face is a steep but not difficult rock climb. This climb is followed by several minor climbs, marked by rock cairns, until the summit metal trig is visible. The final 100m is near flat walking. A communications building and a heli pad have been constructed in the summit area. Refer to Tasmap 1:25000 scale Bowes sheet. Provides access to Gordon River Gorge. Located on the Gordon Plains east of The Thumbs, grid reference (AGD 66) - Adamsfield Track 448820E, 5270750N; Gordon River Gorge 447800E, 5276350N (Determine using map grid). The track is 7km long with a 20m-height gain. Expect to take at least 4 hours to reach the Gordon River. The track is mostly in good condition, some scrub usually at creek crossings, some bits are in excellent condition while other bits are quite hard to follow. Track starts on the Adamsfield Track and ends just short of where the Huntley River joins the Gordon River. Provides access to Mt Sprent, Wilmot and Frankland Range. Located between Serpentine Dam and Mt Sprent, Strathgordon, South West Tasmania, grid reference (GDA94) - Serpentine Dam 416728E, 5263496N; Mt Sprent 415241E, 5261787N. An official Parks maintained track that ascends steeply with sections of treated pine “steps”. The track is muddy and slippery all year round. Where there isn’t a tree trunk to haul on there are some treated pine hand haulers. The track is 3.5km long climbs for 750m above the dam. Expect to take 2.5 to 3.5 hours to the top. From the Serpentine Dam carpark overlooking the dam, walk across the dam and climb up the steep set of steps. Then follow the track steeply uphill. (There is nowhere else to go but up. NB this differs from the track marked on the 1:25000 Tasmap). After around half an hour the track opens out to reveal spectacular views of Lake Pedder. The track is still uphill but not quite as steep. The overall grade is 20%. The track is easy to follow with only one spot where there is a split. Take the right hand track as the other heads around the hill. At around 2 hours from the car park a saddle is reached (55G 415235, 5262347 (GDA94)) where you can see west to the vast Wilderness while still maintaining good views of the lake. From here it is a windy track with some rock clambering to the top where there is a large cairn. Shown on Tasmap 1:25000 Topographic Sprent Sheet. Provided access to the old Lake Pedder beach from the Gordon River Road near The Sentinel Ran. Located between Gordon River Road and Lake Pedder (original), grid reference (AGD 66) - (now revegetated) Pedder Track Rest Area 435000E, 5253800N; Fake Pedder 433600E, 5245800N (Determine using map grid). Track starts on western edge of the now revegetated Pedder Track Rest Area, as shown on the 1st Edition of the Tasmap 1:25000 scale map sheet McPartlan, is 9km long with a 300m height difference. Slowly disappearing. In 1974 this was a major wide track, now it is a narrow foot track to the scrub edge (2km). After this, track is thickly overgrown and impassable until other side of The Sentinel Range. Bushfire during January 2010 may have resulted in the scrub becoming passable. An overnight return walk. Used by rafters to access the Denison River from Pearce Basin, Lake Gordon. Located between Lake Gordon and the Denison River near the Huon Pine Reserve, grid reference (AGD 66) - Pearce Basin 419350E, 5279525N; Denison Valley 4185575E, 5282100N (Determine using map grid). Track is overgrown and at times vague. There is plenty of tape between the basin and the high point at 541m. Track is 4km long with a 400m-height gain. Expect to take 4 hours. From the lake edge look for the many pieces of long tape near the top of the full level of the lake (the tide mark around the lake). The track initially (1.5km) is through Button Grass following a ridge up to the high point 541m. Later it goes through tall rainforest with horizontal (1km). The ridge zigzags toward spot height 541m, and you need to be careful in following it. At times it uses fallen logs. Around the high point ferns obscure the track, look for the tape. After the high point 541m, the track descends a narrow ridge initial cloth in rainforest, later in Button Grass revealing excellent views of the Denison River valley. Near a rocky knoll the track descends the ridge to your right under the knoll. For the entire length it is always on top of the ridgeline. The track ends where the ridge meets the Denison river plains. From here head north across the trackless scrubby plains to the Denison River camp at 418500E, 5285150N (AGD 66). Not marked on maps. Built as an exit route for stranded mariners at Port Davey. This piece of the track can be used to climb Mt Bowes. Located between Frodshams Pass and Gelignite Creek. Grid reference (AGD 66) - Mueller Road (Frodshams Pass) 450450E, 5259200N; Gelignite Creek 449400E, 5251600N (Determine using map grid). This is a constructed graded track that is now very overgrown in parts. Pink tape marks the route to the Mt Bowes turnoff. Originally this track began at Maydena and went via Frodshams Pass, Celtic Hill and Scots Peak to Bathurst Harbour. The track has been developed in recent years and now you can drive an automobile along it in parts. It is known as the Gordon River Road (Maydena to Frodshams Pass) and Scots Peak Road (Gelignite Plains to Celtic Hill). Between Mueller Road just after Frodshams Pass and Scots Peak Road, the track is still a foot track. This section starts on Mueller Road at a rock cairn on the right hand side (south) of Mueller Rd about 600m in from the gate and traverses Mt Bowes. (To climb Mt Bowes, follow track for 3 hours from trackhead to grid reference 452500E, 5255800N(GDA94). Then follow faint pad that leaves the main track here uphill for another 30 minutes to the summit of Mt Bowes) South of Mt Bowes track eventually becomes Scots Peak Road. Provides a direct route onto the north east ridge of Mt. Anne. Track begins at a disused quarry 100m east of Scots Peak Road near Gelignite Creek, grid reference (AGD 66) - Quarry off Scots Peak Road 449300E, 5251100N; North East Ridge 454150E, 5246400N (Determine using map grid). Track begins at a disused quarry, just south of Gelignite Creek and east of Scots Peak Road. To find start from road, park on south side of Gelignite Creek. From here walk in a southeasterly direction to disused quarry (100m). Locate old Bombardier track (usually with two worn pads) on southeastern edge of quarry. Track follows the northern side of the Buttongrass Plain toward the southeast. The track is taped through stands of forests that cross the plain. It eventually enters forest and after a while begins to climb a ridge toward the crest of the northeast ridge of Mt Anne. It is well marked and worn within the forest. Take care near tree-falls to stay on the marked route. The route finishes on the North-East Ridge east of spot height 1100m and only about 50m from the sinkhole of Anne-A-Kananda Cave. Track is a visible Bombardier track across Button Grass plain, taped worn route up ridge and is 7.5 km long with a 750m-height gain. Expect to take 5-6hours. Track is not shown on maps. Today’s track is part of original mariners overland route to Geeveston, now part of South Coast Walk. Located between Scotts Peak, Bathurst Harbour and Melaleuca. Original access track for tin miners of Melaleuca, now part of South Coast Walk. Located between Cockle Creek and Melaleuca, Track well used and maintained with some track hardening and some muddy sections, 130km long. Expect to take 7-10 days. Provides access to the Jubilee Range from the Jubilee Road in the Styx Valley. This is a partially tagged route. Attention needs to be paid to keeping on the route early on. To access the track, head west on Gordon River Road for 3 kilometres, cross an overpass (which allows the Styx road to go underneath), and turn north onto the Styx road just beyond the overpass. Take the right fork after 200 metres. This is the Styx road which loops south under the highway. Follow the Styx Road for 10km to the Jubilee Road in the Styx Valley. Turn onto Jubilee Rd (there is a gate here, check with Forestry Tas whether gate is locked). The Jubilee Range Route leaves the Jubilee Road where it is closest to Mt. Jubilee, look for a cairn on the left, and some pink tapes indicating the start of the track. It cuts through a mix of button grass, tea tree and bauera until it reaches an obvious button grass ridge. Some new tapes have been put in recently on the early stages of the route, but they peter out in the button grass closer to the summit. Mt. Jubilee is 2-3km from the road, the Jubilee Range High Point is another 2km further along. Allow 1.5-2 hours to get to Mt Jubilee, and a further hour to the high point of the range. A nice little button grass range. On a good day, being so centrally located, the views are great. Route not shown on maps. Refer to Tasmap 1:25000 scale SKELETON sheet. Links Window Pane Bay and the South West Cape Range with Melaleuca Airstrip via Mt Melaleuca. Track is overgrown and crosses Mt. Melaleuca (595m). Expect to take 1.5days. Not shown on maps.
Provides access to Wylds Craig and Mt Shakespeare. Located at the northern end of the Florentine Valley. Track has been rerouted and now starts at grid reference (GDA94), 453275E, 5296720N; Edge of Clearfell 452850E, 5296618N; Track junction of old and new tracks on ridgeline 452690E, 5296624N (Determined using a hand held GPS). Track is 5.5km long and climbs 670m to Wylds Craig, expect to take 4 hours to reach the top. To get to the start of the new track from Maydena, you need to turn onto the Florentine Road west of Maydena and travel north for 40km to Tiger Road (454835E, 5294879N). Turn west onto Tiger Road, cross Florentine River, turn northeast (right) onto Tiger Spur 21 Road after river, veer left at next junction (start of plantation) and hard left again at next junction, proceed uphill through plantation to new clearing and start of track.
